A Shot for Dessert

As I was thinking about what would be the shot for this week, I remembered a shot that I’ve only had a few times but actually tastes like what it’s named after. My buddy, Brad W., introduced me to this shot after he lost a round of darts one time at Remies. At first glance I didn’t know what I was getting into, a shot with a lemon covered in… sugar? Alright, down the hatch, and I was pleasantly surprised! So, this week’s shot of the week (good from Monday, October 4 until Sunday, October 10) is Chocolate Cake.

Chocolate Cake

  • 1/2 oz. Frangelico
  • 1/2 oz. Vodka
  • Lemon covered in sugar

Take the vodka and Frangelico and shake with ice to chill, pour into a shot glass. After drinking the shot, suck on the sugar covered lemon. The lemon and sugar adds a little texture to really complete the ‘chocolate cake’ experience. If you’ve never had it, it’s definitely worth the experience at least once! This shot is available at most bars in Marquette, cheers!

Scooby Dooby Doo!

Ah yes, “Scooby-Dooby-Do, where are you? We’ve got some work to do now.” If you weren’t thinking of the theme song before, you are now! There is a problem with picking this shot though, there are a bunch of different ways that it can be made. We’re going to use Bailey’s in ours, but a common substitute for the Irish Creme is your everyday Milk. So, without any further ado, your shot of the week (good from Monday, September 27 until Sunday, October 3) is the Scooby Snack.

Scooby Snack

  • 1/2 oz Midori melon liqueur
  • 1/2 oz Malibu coconut rum
  • 1/2 oz Bailey’s Irish Creme
  • 1/2 oz Pineapple juice

Pour all four ingredients into your shaker… and shake before pouring it into your shot glass (or high ball glass – depending on the proportions). If you have whipped cream, put some on top of the shot. As I said earlier, most of the recipes out there will swap out the Bailey’s for either cream or milk, it’s up to you. This shot can be enjoyed at most bars in Marquette, cheers!

Last Call Birthday Bash

Last Call Marquette turned 1 a few days ago (Sunday, September 19), to think we’ve been around – providing the Marquette community with drink specials – for a full year now! This is cause for a celebration, and so we shall with the Last Call Birthday Bash coming up this Friday at The Mixx.

Our buddies from Milwaukee, will be providing the music and entertainment for the night. They performed at the Yooper Playment Party back in April. Now it’s homecoming, and they are back to host the Step Competition for the 3rd year in a row and they’re sticking around to DJ our Birthday Bash! Yes, DJ Fatmackin’ of Position Players Incorporated (PPI) will be on the 1′s and 2′s all night!

Oh, and if that’s not enough to get your juices flowing… it’s a black dress party! So girls, that means you get to pull out you favorite little black dress out of the closet and show it off around Marquette. I have one more surprise up my sleeve. As a sponsor, Red Bull is giving us a mini-fridge to give away!

There’s a ton of stuff going on this Friday at the Mixx, you won’t want to miss any of it. To see even more details on the event, click on the B-Day Bash tab at the top of the website. We can’t wait to see you there!

C-Pipe

There are a lot of shots and bomb-shots out there, it’s hard to say you have had ‘em all in your first year of being 21. Needless to say, I am a few years past the monumental age of 21. It took me to travel out to Colorado for a spring break for me to experience this week’s shot. There are multiple flavor variations you can go with, because one key ingredient is Pucker, and even the most inexperienced drinker knows that Pucker has a few flavors. That being said, this week’s shot of the week (good from Monday, September 20 until Sunday, September 26) is the Crack Pipe.

Crack Pipe

  • 1/2 oz Vodka
  • 1/2 oz (grape) Pucker
  • 4 oz Red Bull

That’s right, the Crack Pipe qualifies as a bomb-shot. Also, I picked grape for the flavor of the crack pipe (personal fav!), but you can pick any flavor of Pucker. This shot can be enjoyed at most bars in Marquette, especially at The Mixx this Friday for the Last Call Birthday Bash (Black Dress Party) for $3 a piece! See you Friday, cheers!

Breaking the Tissue Paper Ceiling: 21 and Ready to Party

The way I’ve spent my college career isn’t really different than a lot of people. I showed up to a brand new place and proceeded to get wasted. A lot. I’m not saying it was the most mature or intelligent way to spend my time but this was part of the elusive college experience that I had seen, heard, and dreamed about. It was new, exciting, and very, very illegal.  I was, of course, only 18 years old. I had to convince the old guys in college ([wow] I’m one of those now) to go to the store and get me booze and in those days I was convinced I needed my own 30 rack for every single night. I needed a middleman to enjoy myself and that made it all the more rebellious.

Of course I eventually matured a little (just a little), and figured out that there was more to being in college then blacking out every weekend but I still drank. Obtaining alcohol became easier and easier as my friends turned 21 around me but there was still one taboo that was really left, going to the bar. I would look at these establishments of spirit and spirits and realize that this is a place I couldn’t simply walk into and purchase my beverage of choice. The door always had the bartender that asked the one question I couldn’t really get around, “Do you have an ID?”. Sure I got in to a few bars here and there after figuring out how the system worked and which bars were vulnerable but those occasions were few and far between.

So in June of 2010 I turned 21 in Honolulu. It was a world apart from my drinking home of Marquette but going to the bar carried the same feeling. I walked up and the bouncer checked my ID, which I was all too eager to give to him. I went straight to the bar and ordered my first drink and realized that this was no longer forbidden to me. There was no longer any magical force blocking me from entering an establishment of my choice. The feeling was [quite] electric for someone who had wanted it for so long.  So I went about and enjoyed my night, charged a little higher and smiling a little wider.

Turning 21 is a pretty exciting time because you’re opened up to a new section of the social world. It’s not as much about the alcohol as the places you can go and the people you can meet. The bar culture that exists is a place for fun and celebration. The people are real and you loosen up and become yourself in a place packed with strangers. I’m sure these feelings will mellow and fade away in the years to come but I do hope that every once in a while I’ll feel a little jolt in my spine and remember the anticipation and the excitement of my 21st birthday and when I broke into the world of the bar.

Flash Back Power Hour

I recently came upon an amazing Power Hour set that I thought I should share. It was released over a year ago, so there is a chance that you’ve seen this already. A bunch of these songs reminded me of high school dances and some even made me laugh (i.e. the Thong Song – I still know most of the words). So, if you’re looking for a change to your pregame drinking session, you have to give the 2000′s Decade Power Hour a try! Without any further ado here is part 1 (of 6):

If you’re looking to for all 6 parts, click the respective links below:

Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, and Part 6.

Happy drinking!

A Journey Down South

Alright gang, let’s get ready for a road trip! The best part is we won’t have to go far to get a taste of Alabama and unfortunately based on the name of this shot… we may have been accused of a misdemeanor somewhere along the way. Alright, maybe that’s a bit of a stretch but I think we’re ready for this week’s shot of the week (good from Monday, September 13 until Sunday, September 19), which is the Alabama Slammer.

Alabama Slammer

  • 1/2 oz Amaretto Almond liqueur
  • 1/2 oz Southern Comfort Peach liqueur
  • 1/2 oz Sloe Gin
  • 1 splash of Orange Juice
  • 1 splash of sweet and sour mix

Now take all these ingredients and shake ‘em up with ice until chilled, then serve. This shot remains to be a popular one both for the newly 21 year old’s and those that are now ‘over the hill’. Enjoy the Alabama Slammer at a bar of your choosing in Marquette, cheers!

-JMatt

  • Monday-Friday
    • $1.50 drafts and $2.25 domestic bottles until 8pm
    • $1.25 PBR until 8pm ($1.50 after 8pm)
    • $3 KBC drafts all day
  • Monday-Sunday
    • $2 Budweiser (16 oz) all day

Buttery Nipple

This week I thought I should just keep it simple, I’m sure you’ve heard of this one! This week’s shot of the week (good from Tuesday, September 7 until Sunday, September 12) is the Buttery Nipple.

Buttery Nipple

  • 1 oz. Butterscotch Schnapps
  • 1/2 oz. Bailey’s Irish Creme

Pour the butterscotch schnapps into the shot glass first, then attempt to float the Bailey’s on top of that. There you have it, the classic Buttery Nipple. This shot can be enjoyed at most bars in Marquette, cheers!

New Site Layout

I know it’s not too hard to notice that we recently did an overhaul on the website. New layout, slight change (well maybe more than slight) in the color scheme and the blog moved. Well, here is the reason we changed things up. This is the first website I created, about a year ago and since then I have done a handful of other sites. I figure with all I’ve learned it was time to revamp this one.

1. New Layout

  • For the most part, it is the same layout as the previous site… it is a little wider than the previous design though.
  • Instead of having the specials listed above the header, we dropped it underneath to make it easier for you to access the specials. We also listed the Bars’ specials first because it is one the most popular page on the site.
  • We also added some pages at the top such as our shots archive, some photos from past events and of course the blog.

2. Color Scheme

  • We had the darker layout which focused on orange with blue in our logos. As you can tell, we went a little lighter and put the focus on blue with accents of orange. This should be much easier on the eyes!

3. Home Page

  • The previous website had the blog right on the front page, made the site load slower and just seemed like an odd place for it. Since the site is all about drink specials, we wanted to put the focus on it and let people know what the site is about every time they get to the Home page. Plus, we are able to focus your attention to the most important content now. Listing just one ‘shot of the week’ on the front page, our custom drinks (no longer lost in the shuffle) and any other important news for the Marquette community (such as opportunities with Last Call Marquette!)

4. Blog

  • Now that we have moved the blog, we are going to treat the blog more as an actual blog! Before, we recognized that it was our landing page and we didn’t want to get too carried away. We are going to be adding a few new writers. We have one so far, he recently turned 21 and will be sharing his stories of drinking in Marquette. We are looking for a girl that is turning 21 or going to be 21 soon to write for us too. Leave a comment if you think you have what it takes to be a writer in our blog!

That pretty much covers all the changes, we are looking to expand our presence in the community by growing our street team. For more information, go to the Home page and shoot me an email!

Labor Day Weekend!

This coming weekend is Labor Day Weekend, I can’t wait! Three day weekends are always the best, especially if most of your classes are on Monday! With thinking about this shot, I wanted to do an ‘all white’ shot but I couldn’t think of one (if you have any ideas, leave me a comment and I will make it next week’s shot). Then I thought that a big part of the weekend had to do with grilling out on the BBQ. As tempting as a bacon shot sounds, I think I’ll go with something a little easier and more commonly ordered at the bars. This week’s shot of the week (good from Monday, August 30 – Sunday, September 5) is the Lemon Drop.

Lemon Drop

  • 1/2 oz Vodka
  • 1/2 oz Lemon Juice
  • 1 sugar cube

Now, I know there are a lot of ways that this shot is done. With this recipe, you muddle the sugar cube and shake it up with the vodka and lemon juice. Another recipe would have you use an ounce of vodka and a splash of Lemon Juice, while putting the sugar around the rim of the glass. Then there is my personal favorite – regardless the proportions of vodka and lemon juice – after taking the shot, suck on a lemon slice that is covered in sugar. This shot is available at most bars in Marquette, enjoy!

-JMatt

The MQT

Since I am working on changing over the new website this week and making sure all the specials are as up to date as possible I forgot all about this week’s shot. So rather than come up with something new, I think I will actually revisit a shot this week. In fact it’s our personal shot. The shot of the week (good from Wednesday, August 25 until Sunday, August 29) is the M-Q-T.

MQT

  • 1/3 oz of Gin
  • 1/3 oz of Blue Curacao
  • 1/3 oz of Orange Juice

Once again, big ups to Flanigan’s for making this shot for us! Go out and order it this week at the bars in Marquette, cheers!

-JMatt

Construction Zone

Alright, so with almost a year under our belt, we decided it was time to upgrade the website a bit. We have been working on a new layout and we will have it up by the week’s end (or at least that is our goal). So keeping with the ‘construction’ theme, I thought it would be the perfect time to provide the cement mixer as the shot this week, but with a little added surprise! This week’s shot of the week (good from Monday, August 16 until Sunday, August 22) is the Cement Kicker.

Cement Kicker

  • 1 oz. Bailey’s Irish Creme (shot 1)
  • 1/2 oz. Lime Juice
  • 1/2 oz. Bacardi 151

Pour the shot of baileys in your mouth, but don’t swallow. Then take the shot of Lime Juice and 151 and pour it in, now shake your head like a cement mixer and let that baby transform to a solid in your mouth and swallow! This shot is available at most bars in Marquette, cheers!

-JMatt

Sex on the Beach

Based on the title you may think I’m going to tell you to head down to Remies and pick up a mini pitcher of either a Long Island or Sex on the Beach/Pooltable or one of their many other alcohol filled cocktails. BUT, I’ll remind you that this feature is for shots, and just like the cocktail there are quite a bit of ingredients in this mini version of the drink. This week’s shot of the week (good from Monday, August 9 through Sunday, August 15) is Sex on the Beach.

Sex on the Beach

  • 1/2 oz. Black Raspberry Liqueur
  • 1/2 oz. Melon Liqueur
  • 1/2 oz. Vodka
  • 1 oz. Pineapple Juice
  • Splash of Cranberry Juice

Shake up the ingredients before pouring in the shot glass(es), then pour a splash of Cranberry Juice on top of each shot. Order it up at your favorite bar in Marquette, enoy!

-JMatt

ShArK wEEk

I am ready for shark week on the Discovery channel. Plus, with all the drinking games out there for the week, I thought I will give you a suggestion for a drink to try in honor of it. This week’s shot of the week (good from Monday, August 2 until Sunday, August 8) is the Black and Blue Shark.

Black and Blue Shark

  • 1 oz. Jack Daniels
  • 1/2 oz. Gold Tequila (Cuervo)
  • 1/2 oz. Vodka
  • 1/2 oz. Blue Curacao

Mix and serve in a large/double shot glass. This is a great shot to kick off Shark Week with and is available at most bars in Marquette, enjoy!

-JMatt

Summer Fun

With one more week left in the summer month of July, I figured it was time to pull out the floaties and get you a great summer shot! Marquette is known for it’s summer fun, relaxing at the beach on a warm afternoon, cliff jumping at Black Rocks and hiking up Sugarloaf Mountain. Even spending time out on the water is a great time to spend the day, whether it’s fishing, jet-skiing or just inner tubing. This week’s shot of the week (good from Monday, July 26 until Sunday, August 1) is the Banana Boat.

Banana Boat

  • 1/2 oz Tequila
  • 1/4 oz Banana Liqueur
  • 1/4 oz Lime Juice

Granted, it’s been a while since I’ve seen a Banana Boat on the waters of Lake Superior. What’s your favorite summer shot? Leave a comment and let me know. This shot can be enjoyed at most bars in Marquette, cheers!

-JMatt

Old School Treat, New School Twist

Alright, I have been holding out on the lovely ladies of Marquette… there is a shot that has never failed me when I order for a girl. Which could also be why I’ve been stingy on this recipe. But anyways, with it being the summer time and maybe I heard the ice cream truck drive through my neighborhood the other day, it brought back some nice memories. Well, even though the ingredients for this shot is relatively simple, it actually tastes like what it’s supposed to! This week’s shot of the week (good from Monday, July 19 until Sunday, 25) is the Dreamsicle.

Dreamsicle

  • 1/2 oz Tequila Rose
  • 1/2 oz Orange Juice

You must serve this shot chilled, and you have to shake it before pouring it into the shot glass. It may come out looking a little chunky, but don’t worry, it tastes great… just don’t wait too long to slam it. This shot can be enjoyed at most bars in Marquette, cheers!

-JMatt

Drop ‘Em

Alright, time to get back into the swing of things. With the last shot stretching over 2 weeks, I figured I’d give you another big shot to make up for it. This week’s shot of the week (good from Monday, July 12 until Sunday, July 18) is the Panty Dropper!

Panty Dropper

  • 1/3 oz. Bacardi 151
  • 1/3 oz. Amaretto
  • 1/3 oz. Southern Comfort
  • Red Bull

Alright, pour the Bacardi 151, Amaretto and SoCo into a shot glass, then drop it into the Red Bull. Simple, yes it’s a bomb! Now, you can increase the proportions for the shot, just keep all three equal. I had about 3 in a row at the bar last weekend and they were great! This bomb shot is available at most bars in Marquette, tell ‘em you want LastCallMqt.com’s shot of the week… if they don’t know what you’re talking about send them to the site! Cheers!

-JMatt

Drinking Independence

Break out the firecrackers, grab your hand sized American flag and crack open the beers… this weekend we’re celebrating our independence! So all week, let’s take shots that keep us in the mindset of the 4th. This week’s shot of the week will go for an extra week (good from Monday, June 28 until Sunday, July 11) is the Bomb Pop.

Bomb Pop

  • 4-6 oz. Mike’s Hard Lemonade
  • 1 oz. Blue UV Vodka
  • Splash of Grenadine

In a highball glass or pint glass, pour about half the bottle of Mike’s Hard Lemonade (4-6 ounces). Then take a shot glass, fill it up with the Blue UV Vodka, splash the Grenadine over the Blue UV. Drop the shot glass into the Mike’s Hard Lemonade and chug! It’s got all 3 colors you need in an American shot… red, white and blue! This shot is available at most bars in Marquette (if they don’t have Mike’s… just use lemonade instead), cheers!

-JMatt

New to the Neighborhood

BW3

We’ve just added a new bar to the long list of Marquette bars! As you probably know, Buffalo Wild Wings has been working on moving a location up to Marquette. They officially opened their doors a few weeks ago and are eager to get you to try them out. Look at the Bars page to see their specials!

-JMatt

JMatt’s Getting Older

Well, I thought for a while what this week’s shot should be, especially since it is my birthday week (23 on June 26th). I have featured a few of my favorite shots already, and it feels too soon to revisit them. If I were to revisit certain ones, it would have been the Chuck Norris, Incredible Hulk, or Superman shots. But I really wanted to think of a different one. So having traveled down memory lane, I remembered my first shot in a bar at the legal age of 21. This week’s shot of the week (good from Monday, June 21 until Sunday, June 27) is SoCo Lime.

SoCo Lime

  • 1 oz. Southern Comfort
  • Splash of Lime Juice

Serve chilled, dependent on your preference you can add more lime to the shot. Yes, this was the first shot that I had as a ‘gift’ to me on my birthday. Pretty simple. Definitely not the worst way to start off the night either. This shot is available at most bars in Marquette, cheers!

-JMatt

Happy Father’s Day!

This Sunday is Father’s Day, the day where Dad’s get custom coffee mugs and ‘unique’ ties from their kids. So with that in mind, I figured it was time to go with a stiff shot for you to share with your old man. This week’s shot of the week (good from Monday, June 14 until Sunday, June 20) is the 3 Wise Men.

3 Wise Men

  • 1/3 oz. Johnnie Walker
  • 1/3 oz. Jack Daniels
  • 1/3 oz. Jim Beam

What better way to celebrate Father’s day than with the Fathers of Scotch, Whiskey and Bourbon! This shot can be ordered up at most bars in Marquette. Happy Father’s Day (week), cheers!

-JMatt

Mind Eraser

This week I went with a popular shot. I have had a few people asking me recently what was in it, so I figure there’s no better time than the present to list this one. This week’s shot of the week (good from Monday, June 7 until Sunday, June 13) is the Mind Eraser.

Mind Eraser

  • 1/2 oz. Kahlua
  • 1/2 oz. Vodka
  • Splash of Club Soda

Don’t mix the ingredients in a shaker! You can chill the shot glasses first (unless the bar is over-crowded) otherwise, warm ain’t so bad. Also, you can also swap out club soda for some Sprite. If you want the true effect of the mind eraser, make this shot into a shooter (doubling the ingredients) and drink it through a straw! This shot is available at most bars in Marquette, enjoy!

-JMatt

R.I.P. JT’s Shaft

To those that haven’t heard yet or on summer vacation, JT’s Shaft recently closed their doors for good after 20+ years of service. No one has released any information as to why they had to unfortunately close. At first people were outraged when they heard that their favorite bartender, Johnny, had been let go. Now, it appears to make sense why he no longer works at the Shaft. Feel free to share your favorite memories of JT’s Shaft and long-term bartender, Johnny!

Last Call Marquette, never wants to have to delete a bar from the site, so next time you are having a frosty cold one, raise it up to JT’s Shaft! You will be missed!

-JMatt

Lifesaver

Hope you had a great Memorial Day weekend and got plenty of extra rest in. I sure did, in fact that is why I took yesterday off and waited to post the shot of the week until today. This week’s shot of the week (good from Tuesday, June 1 until Sunday, June 6) is the Raspberry Lifesaver.

Raspberry Lifesaver

  • 1/2 oz. Smirnoff Raspberry Vodka
  • 1/2 oz. Pineapple Juice
  • Splash of Grenadine

Another candy-like shot, but not too powerful of a shot. This shot can be enjoyed at most bars in Marquette, cheers!

-JMatt

Birthday Celebration

LastCallMqt.com is still a few months away from rounding out its first year, but nonetheless, plans for a kick-ass party have started. Though the details are still pretty limited, we have selected the location and date of the party. On Friday, September 24 we will have our celebration at The Mixx. Position Players Incorporated (PPI) will be in attendance, DJ Fatmackin’ will be on the 1′s and 2′s, P-Rock might even perform a few songs!

That’s all that we know for sure right now, but hey we’re still four months away! Just thought I would share the good news. I hope that you will be able to come out and celebrate with us as we take on another year, providing the Marquette community with drink specials and big events that keeps everyone talking!

-JMatt
